What's happening: The Polk County Board of Commissioners meets today at 3 p.m. at the court-house annex. The Tryon Town Council meets today at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall. There will be a covered dish luncheon meeting of the AARP Chapter #2182 tomorrow at the Congregational Church in Tryon at 12:30 p.m. Following the luncheon, a program about the North Carolina Welcome Center will be presented by Rana Shytie, assistant manager. Everyone is invited. Tire Tryon Community Cho rus will present its annual Spring Concert May 22-24. The Town of Columbus will hold a public hearing May 27 for citizens to comment on the proposed annexation of Harold Burrell's gas station/ conve nience store property at the entrance to the industrial park on Hwy. 108. The hearing will be held at 9 a.m. in Town Hall. Read Tiie Bulletin For Local News Polk County Schools' Test Scores Improve Both CAT and Writing Tests scores have improved over a two-year comparison, Assoc. Supt. Susan S. Leonard told the Polk County Board of Educa tion. But the California Achieve ment Test (CAT) was given for the last time in Polk County this spring. Next year Polk County students will take the North Carolina end-of grade tests, Leonard said. Grades 3-8 will field test for the end of the grade tests next week, she pointed out. The state end-of-grade tests will be more in line with the goals of Outcome Based Edu cation (OBE), Leonard explained. The majority of the test is open-ended rather than multiple choice, though some multiple choice will be included. Writing skills and knowledge must be used in an answer, she explained. "I think it's very good (the state end-of-grade testing). It goes along with our current structure and uses higher level thinking skills," she said. One difference in the two testing systems is that Polk County will no longer be com pared with national norms, but with state norms only, Leonard said. The 1991-92 CAT test scores and the N.C. A marshal must have a three-year grade average of 90 or above. Chief Marshal is Holly Eliza beth Crain, daughter of Keith and Phyllis Crain of Green Creek, active in tennis, soccer, peer helping and several clubs. The other marshals are: Jennifer Jane (J.J.) Bumgard ner, daughter of Rodney and Pam Bumgardner of Sunny View, active in volleyball, bas ketball, softball, church and several clubs.
